Smart Active Displays for Multidimensional Process Control

Abstract:

Process control charts show data versus time with specified control limits (i.e. operating range) together with alerts for undesirable events. As many variables are interrelated, such charts result in False Positives (i.e. overall operation is out of control, though each variable is in range) and also False Alarms (when conservative operating ranges are used).  This has motivated the development of advanced process control strategies. We present an active smart display incorporating the multivariate interrelations of the system being controlled. Based on the breakthroughs in multidimensional visualization with Parallel Coordinates, complex relationships are represented by a hypersurface constructed from the data.  False positives and false alarms can be substantially reduced while the available operating range is greatly enlarged achieving much higher yields. It is known mathematically that the "box representations" (as specified by the variable's ranges) is a bad approximation of multidimensional relations and becomes rapidly worse as the number of variables increases (the "curse of dimensionality"). With the proposed methodology a process (as production in manufacturing), can be operated much more accurately and profitably. The state of the system is controlled and evaluated from the interaction of ALL the parameters simultaneously. Criticalities are understood and dealt with dynamically, accumulated tolerance errors can be compensated, onset of failures detected and recoveries implemented by navigating the system's state within the interior of the hypersurface. Algorithms for Collision Avoidance and Conflict Resolution in Air Traffic Control (3 USA Patents) based on Parallel Coordinates were developed earlier.
